Intro
Colorado has 58 peaks over 14,000 feet and a passionate community of people trying to climb them. Finding a partner for a specific peak on a specific day means juggling forums and group texts, and fitness apps like AllTrails and Strava simply aren’t built for it. So people end up summiting solo, which carries real risk.
Build
I designed Fifty8 in Figma, then had Claude Code build it straight from the Figma file over MCP, on React, Vite, Supabase and Vercel. The design file became the build, with no spec to retype, and it went from Figma to shipped in a week. The core loop is simple: browse peaks, see who’s going, join a hike. I iterated and added features as I spoke to fellow hikers and learned their pain points.
I made it a progressive web app instead of a native one. Joining a hike should never start with an app-store install.
Where Claude got it wrong
Claude Code built out the summit logs as a generic table of stats. I redesigned them in Figma, allowing for more personal touches, and had them rebuilt. If it matters, I design it first.
Impact
Fifty8 is live at fifty8.co with real accounts. Friends use it to plan big weekend hikes, with live weather and a message board for every peak. I’m refining it over the winter, ahead of the real push in spring when the snow starts to melt.
